Course Objective
The goal of this course is to investigate and debate biological databases, as well as various bioinformatics tools and methodologies, in order to better comprehend the information flow between DNA-RNA and protein. This course also covers sequence comparison, phylogenetic tree construction, species distance computation, microarray data assessment, genomic, proteomic, and pharmacogenetic techniques. The use and application of bioinformatics tools, as well as the introduction and use of genome browsers and databases. It enables learning approaches to contribute to the study of "health and quality of life" sustainability principles and to think broadly.
Brief Content of the Course
Basics of molecular genetics: the structure of DNA, transcription, translation, gene expression regulation Techniques used in recombinant DNA technology: restriction enzymes, cloning vectors, plasmids, phages, transformation to E.coli Gene expression analysis, cDNA synthesis, cDNA libraries, genomic libraries Genomics, DNA sequencing, human genome project Transgenic plants and animals: gene knock out, knock in and Crispr-Cas9 systems Applications of molecular genetics in medicine and forensics, personalized medicine
