Course Objective
The objective of this course is to present the historical development of mathematics starting from around 50,000 BCE. It is intended that students gain an understanding of the historical evolution of mathematics beginning with Chinese and Babylonian mathematics, recognize how mathematics, which initially arose from everyday needs, gradually acquired a formal structure over time, and comprehend the multicultural nature of mathematics by emphasizing the features that distinguish Eastern and Western mathematical traditions. Additionally, the course aims to provide students with insight into the origins of the mathematical concepts we use today, to help them recognize the potential of the history of mathematics for mathematics education, and to understand the role mathematics has played in the development of modern civilization.
Brief Content of the Course
The place of the history of mathematics in mathematics education, mathematics arising from daily needs, Ancient Greek mathematics, developments after Thales and Pythagoras, the School of Alexandria: Euclid and Archimedes, mathematicians of the Islamic world between the 8th and 15th centuries CE, and the birth of modern mathematics.
