Course Objective
The aim of the course is to provide pre-service mathematics teachers with knowledge of the place of mathematics in science, methods of mathematical thinking, crises in the history of mathematics and philosophical views on the foundations of mathematics in order to increase their awareness of the nature of mathematics.
Brief Content of the Course
In this course, the definition of mathematics, its place in science, mathematical thinking methods, distinctions between inductive and deductive thinking, various meanings of mathematical concepts and propositions, the applicability of mathematics in the real world, mathematical crises, philosophical views on the foundations of mathematics, basic theories in the philosophy of mathematics: Logicism, Topics such as Formalism, Structuralism and Intuitionism, the work of pioneers of the philosophy of mathematics such as Frege, Russell, Hilbert, Brouwer, and Gödel will be covered.
