Course Objective
It is to discuss the phenomenon of culture and identity with its different dimensions and to examine its reflections in urban space by revealing how existing differences are related to economic and social structures.
Brief Content of the Course
The foundations of the phenomenon of modernism, the perception of space it reveals and the criticisms directed to the emerging modern cities will be revealed. Then, the postmodern point of view, the increasing importance of different cultures and identities, and the changing perception of space will be examined, and what kind of differentiation this leads to in urban space will be examined. In addition, the role of the phenomenon of globalization in the emergence of this change and radical socio-spatial transformations in developed and developing countries will be discussed with examples. Different dimensions of culture and identity (national/local identity, urban/rural identities, gender-based identities, religious/ethnic identities, class identity); ontological and epistemological foundations of modernism and postmodernism; perception of space and spatial transformations arising from these perspectives; economic, social and spatial dimensions of the globalization process, restructuring and radical transformations in cities.
