Course Objective
The aim of this course is to examine old age and the aging process from a social work perspective; to analyze the needs and social problems experienced by older individuals and the factors affecting their well-being; and to provide students with knowledge, awareness, and professional skills regarding social work practices with older people, service models, policies, and ethical dimensions.
Brief Content of the Course
The course covers the concept of aging, theories of aging, and the biopsychosocial characteristics and needs of older adults. Issues such as poverty, loneliness, ageism, health and care services, family roles, and social support systems in old age are discussed. Gerontological social work practices in Turkey and worldwide are examined, with a focus on institutional and community-based services, active aging policies, and ethical issues.
