Course Objective
To provide prospective classroom teachers with an understanding of the objectives of mathematics teaching and the basic strategies and methods they can use in teaching mathematics. To introduce the primary school mathematics curriculum, to provide them with knowledge and skills regarding important skills in mathematics education and to develop appropriate activities. To provide them with an understanding of the basic concepts and teaching principles of the four operations with natural numbers (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division), and to provide them with the skills to identify and address student errors and difficulties in this area.
Brief Content of the Course
The purpose and basic principles of mathematics teaching; the history of mathematics teaching; teaching and learning strategies to be used in mathematics teaching; the scope, purpose, and characteristics of the primary school mathematics curriculum; major learning theories and their relationship with mathematics learning; important skills in mathematics education, communication, reasoning, mathematical modeling, problem solving (strategies, stages, problem types, etc.), use of information and communication technologies, and appropriate use of tools and equipment; the development of the child's number concept (pre-counting developments, one-to-one correspondence, cardinal value, comparison, equivalence, minority-majority, etc.); the formation and structural properties of natural numbers; arithmetic operations; relevant topics, outcomes, and appropriate activity examples in the primary school mathematics curriculum for 1st-4th grades.
