Traditional HANDICRAFTS

Ömer Halidemir University, Traditional Handicrafts Programme began its education life in the 2012 - 2013 academic year, after getting undergraduate students. Handicrafts Associate Degree Programme is a two-year-programme which consists of 4 semesters, each having 30 ECTS. 1 ECTS refers to 30-hour-workload in one year for a student. The Programme has five young and dynamic academic staff. The department consists of Traditional Handicrafts Programme.

In the first year of the programme, besides taking compulsory lessons such as Turkish language, Foreign Language, and Ataturk Principles and the History of Revolution, students concentrate on the field by taking courses such as Introduction to Handicrafts, Basic Art Education, Designs, Basic Weaving Preparatory, Basic Design, Surface Decorative Painting, Fiber and Paint Technology, Traditional Embroidery, Marbling, Calligraphy, Weaving, Miniature, Fabric Design, Jewelry Making Techniques. At the end of the second year, students who succeed in the courses graduate from the program as a technician.

Adobe Photoshop CS6 and Adobe illustrator will be taught in Handicraft courses from the academic year 2013-2014 to educate the department’s students as art designers who contribute to today’s technology.

Aims and Objectives

Aims
1. To move traditional art works to the universal platform on the basis of the art structure and past values of Turkish society.
2. To bring out new handiworks by having all the education on analyzing, classifying and presenting our cultural values, and on reaching contemporary interpretations of plastic arts of fine arts.
3. To reveal student’s creative power and to develop his research, discovering, applying, trying and finalizing skills with aesthetic concerns in the historical development of Marbling, Calligraphy, Miniature, Illimunation arts which are considered in the scope of Turkish and Islamic Art.

Objectives

To train technicians who have the contemporary vocational education qualifications and who are preferred on the national and international platform.

Level of Qualification and Qualification Awarded

Associate degree students who successfully complete the program will be Traditional Handicrafts Technicians.

Traditional Handicrafts Associate Degree program is a two-year program consist of 120 ECTS credits. The program provides the requirements defined in the Top European Qualifications Framework for Higher Education (QF-EHEA)of Bologna Process as second stage (short cycle) and in the Turkey Higher Education Qualifications Framework (TYYÇ) as "Level 5" for ECTS credit conditions and the level of competence, at the same time, "level 5" requirements defined in the European Qualifications Framework for Lifelong Learning (EQF-LLL)".

Specific Admission Requirements

Placement of Turkish students to the program is done according to YGS-4 type point taken from the Higher Education Entrance examination done by Student Selection and Placement Center (OSYM). In addition, the placement of students is done by OSYM through Vertical Transfer Exam.

Foreign students are admitted through individual applications to the university.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning

With an understanding of lifelong learning, Ömer Halidemir University recognizes the previously taken courses in another institution and exempt them from graduation credit, as long as the courses match with the learning outcomes of the registered programme at Ömer Halidemir University . The learning outcome match and the exemption are decided by the Faculty Board in line with the related laws and regulations.

Profile of the Programme

Culture element of a nation cannot be expressed clearly enough only with one of the following branches; history, anthropology, folklore, sociology and so on. Because the social-cultural elements occur and change in the historical process and in the physical environment, and the factors affecting this process always vary during this process. Of course, art activities are also mirrors reflecting the history of the society they are held in. It is necessary to look deeply in these societies’ art activities to examine and to understand their socio-cultural structure. Handicraft in these arts activities are like silver which gives mirror characteristic to glass. Because of this, Traditional Handicraft is very important.

Understanding the socio-cultural structures needs deep power of intuition and empathy and can be possible after the use of appropriate methods and techniques. Turning to art activities and coalescing with them give the power of intuition and empathy.

Traditional Handicrafts Programme operating under the Department of Crafts in the Vocational School aims to teach you appropriate methods and techniques with developing new technologies and to make you gain necessary qualifications.

Traditional Handicrafts Programme is two year vocational programme (QF-EHEA Bologna Process Framework for Higher Education Qualifications: Quick Level). The programme teaches the skills of using the basic theoretical and practical knowledge acquired in the field in the same area at the same level or a higher level of education.

Graduates of the department are awarded as CRAFTS TECHNICIAN. Traditional Handicrafts Programme operating under the Department of Crafts in the Vocational School aims to teach you appropriate methods and techniques with developing new technologies and to make you gain intuition power and empathy.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The qualification of CRAFTS TECHNICIAN is obtained upon graduation from the Department of Crafts , which requires;
• Completion of all the courses designated within the curriculum of the programme, having a total of 120 ECTS Credits, with passing grades.
• Achievement of a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of at least 2.00 out of 4.00.
• Completion of with a 30 working days (8 ECTS credits) of the summer practice

Access to Further Studies

Students who have successfully graduated from the program may apply to Bachelor’s Degree programmes in or related fields of Crafts in other universities via Vertical Transfer Exam (DGS) organised by OSYM. Also they have the right to apply to Open Faculty of Anadolu University at the 3rd class without any exams.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

The methods applied for assessment of the achievement of the expected program learning outcomes for the entire program of TRADITIONAL HANDICRAFTS are shown below and those those for the individual course units are given in the relevant section of the course description with their contribution to the final grades.

Examinations

The success of students in achieving the expected learning outcomes of each course unit within the curriculum of Traditional Craft Program is evaluated via in-term activities and via final exams which take place at the end of each term.

Evaluation of in-term activities is required at least one mid-term exam and one assigment as compusory methods determined by regulation for pre-gradute programs.

The programmes are encouraged to define more assessment methods for the in-term activities depending on their needs for measuring the achievements of the outcomes at the programme and course unit levels in order to ensure the educational aims and objectives. The nature and number of the assessment methods used for each course unit together with their contribution the final grades are given under the title of “Assessment and Grading” in the sections of course descriptions. These arrangements are announced in advance, at the beginning of each semester and published in the sections of the course descriptions on this web site.

Mid-term and final examinations are conducted in dates, places and times determined and announced by the University. The students’ final semester grade is given by their instructors based on mid-term examination, homework evaluation, short-examinations, final examination and, if there is any, other assessment results taking into account the students’ compliance with attendance to the course activities.

The contributions of the grades of the in-term activities and final exam grade to the final success grade of a course are determined by the course instructor and announced to students within the first two weeks of the semester. Moreover, the contribution of the final exam cannot be less than 40 % and higher than 60% for all the courses within all the degree programmes defined by the Regulations.

Course units, which do not require a mid-term, homework, short-exam and/or a final exam, such as work placement, are determined by the administration of the related departments and specific assessment and grading methods for these courses are also announced through the same channels described above. Evaluation of such activities is made through the procedures defined by the Senate and assessed by Pass (P) or Fail (F) grades.

Grading

The success of a student for each assessment (in-term and final) defined for each course unit is evaluated by the instructor. Evaluations are made over a scale of 100 points and converted to the letter grades at the end of the semester taking into account the standard deviation of grades and grade point average of the class and using the relative evaluation method, principles of which have been set by the Senate.
