Nigde Omer Halisdemir University Department of Translation and Interpreting was established within the School of Foreign Languages in 2010 and entered a new structuring process by being affiliated to the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (now known as the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences) with the decision of the Higher Education Executive Board dated 08.11.2023.

Our department, which has adopted an interdisciplinary perspective in the field of translation since its foundation, aims to train translator candidates with strong linguistic competencies, high cultural sensitivity, analytical thinking and the ability to integrate theoretical knowledge with practical skills.

The department has one associate professor, one assistant professor, four lecturers and one research assistant. Studies to further strengthen the academic staff are ongoing, and for this reason, the department has not yet started accepting students.

The Department of Translation and Interpreting is not limited to language teaching; it aims to provide its students with the ability to translate in specific fields by taking into account the terminology and discourse structure specific to disciplines such as law, literature, social sciences, science, medicine, political science and economics. The curriculum of our department aims to provide students with a comprehensive translation education that combines theoretical knowledge with practical skills. The curriculum includes courses such as translation theories, advanced English grammar and vocabulary, intercultural communication, translation and interpreting techniques, field translations such as law, medicine, literature and technical texts, translation technologies, computer- aided translation tools and terminology management.

In the later stages of the program, students will be encouraged to gain competence not only in English- Turkish language pair but also in second and third foreign languages, with the aim of raising them as highly competitive individuals at national and international level.

Our Department, which has not yet started accepting students, is in the process of developing its academic and institutional infrastructure to train qualified and well-equipped individuals in the field of translation education. The curriculum is designed to meet both academic and sectoral requirements and to support students gain competence various areas of expertise such as freelance and corporate translation, localization, multilingual communication and translation technologies. Our department offers educational perspective that will enable its graduates to be equipped to assume effective roles on a national and international scale.
