This course examines the fundamental concepts of art history, exploring the historical evolution of the notions of “art” and “artist.” It conveys to students that art is not merely an aesthetic creation, but a form of expression shaped by cultural, social, political, and environmental contexts. Starting from prehistoric periods, the course adopts a chronological approach to study artworks produced by different civilizations,
including Mesopotamia, Ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome, as well as the Middle Ages, Renaissance, Baroque, Modern, and Contemporary periods. The formal characteristics of these works, the materials used, production techniques, and their relation to the values of the societies in which they were created are analyzed. Moreover, the course discusses the relationship between artworks and the natural environments of their time, the sustainability of resources used, and historical approaches to preserving cultural heritage. By evaluating how art reflects cultural diversity and has evolved over time, students develop the ability to understand the historical foundations of contemporary artistic practice.
