DEPARTMENT OF SOCIOLOGY
Niğde University Sociology Department was founded in 1994 but has been accepting undergraduate students since 2009 and graduate students (master’s degree) since 2012. The undergraduate program of Sociology is a 4-year program consisting of 8 semesters all of each including 30 ECTS. One ECTS means 30 hours work load for every semester for every student. 65 students are accepted for the undergraduate program every year. Our students need the average grade of 2.00 from the total of all their grades to graduate. In order for our students to be accepted for double major programs, they should have an average grade equal to or above 3.00. Our students could accomplish a double major program by also being student in Turkish language and Literature and History departments in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences or being a student in Economics and Public Administration departments of Economics and Administrative Faculty.
Our department has a dynamic and competent academic staff with 1 Professor, 2 associate professor, 1 assistant professor and 5 research assistants. Our department includes sub-departments of Sociometry, Sociology of Institutions, General Sociology and Methodology and Applied Sociology. In the first year, students start to adapt to the program with the introductory courses to psychology, social anthropology, philosophy, political science, sociology and other basic courses such as; history of philosophy, history of science, popular culture and society and with the general compulsory courses of Turkish language, history of Turkish revolution and English. In the second year, students learn about theoretical courses such as, classical sociological theories, Turkish social structure, sociology of work, Urban Sociology, sociology of religion, social stratification, Sociology of Institutions, Social change, and also other courses in special areas of Sociology of law, sociology of economics and sociology of education and psychology of learning. In the third year, there are also theoretical courses such as; contemporary sociological theories, sociology of crime, sociology of family, demography, classical logic and Turkish Sociology history and also the special area courses such as; philosophy of art, psychology theories, cultural changes. In the fourth year, most of the courses are elective to enable students to study in their areas of interest. Aesthetics, Folkloric Culture, Social Work, Globalization and sociology of tourism can be mentioned as the examples of special area courses. At the end of the fourth year, in addition to the completion of necessary course load, the students who present and defend their theses with success graduate from the program with the title of Sociologist.

Our department’s primary goal is to train sociologists of the future who is creative, participative, and interrogative and can think multi-dimensionally, and can use information technologies efficiently.
Objectives
Our department’s primary target is to become academically successful at national and international level among sociology departments of other universities and to produce academic research and publications. Our other objectives are to educate our students to have necessary scientific and social qualifications, to be able to think critically and to be able to cooperate with others from other disciplines, having leadership qualities.
Level of Qualification and Qualification Awarded
Upon successful completion of this program, students are awarded with the qualification of BACHELOR OF ARTS DEGREE IN SOCIOLOGY.
A Bachelor's Degree Program in Sociology is a 240 ECTS Credits, 4-year program. The program meets the requirements of both the ECTS credits and level descriptors of the first cycle degree qualifications of the Overarching Framework of European Qualifications Framework HE(QF-EHEA) and the 6th level qualifications of the Turkish Qualifications Framework for HE (TYYÇ, NQF-HETR). The level descriptors also meet the 6th level requirements of the qualifications of the European Qualifications Framework for Lifelong Learning (EQF-LLL) .
Specific Admission Requirements
Turkish Students are accepted to the SOCIOLOGY department with the Entrance to the Higher Education Exam (YGS) which is done by the Students Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM). The students who have been successful in Undergraduate Placement Exam (LYS) are placed according to ranking of their TM-3 scores. The foreign students are accepted to the program with the acceptance of their direct applications to the University. Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning
Nigde University recognizes courses taken in other institutions and if the output of these courses is adaptive to the Nigde University program, the credits of these courses are accepted as regular courses of the program in relation with the acceptance of the principle of lifelong learning. The issues regarding the adaptively of the courses to the program and exemption regarding these courses are decided by the Faculty council according to the related laws and regulations.
Program Profile
Sociology Department was founded to present a high quality program which enables students to learn and research sociological facts and issues with an analytical mind. This program primarily includes the areas of Sociology of Crime, Research methods and techniques, Sociology of Family, and labor relations, Sociology of Politics and Sociology of Migration and development. For this reason, the students are presented with the related compulsory and elective courses.
The undergraduate program of Sociology (Bologna Process Higher Education Qualifications Framework first cycle and 6th level in TYYÇ) is an academic program aiming to supply graduates with knowledge, qualifications and competence in the occupational areas, research areas and in acceptance to MS and Ph.D. programs. Occupational Profiles of Graduates with examples
Since sociology is related with the problems of society, the graduates can be employed in centers of family consultancy which are working under the supervision of provincial general directorates of the Ministry of Family and Social Policies after receiving the certificate of family consultant. They can also open their own Family Consultancy Centers as family consultants. Moreover, after gaining related teacher certification, they are employed in National Education Ministry or in private schools or private teaching institutions as teachers of philosophy and related disciplines. In addition, they can be employed in research firms, marketing, social projects in relation with their personal interest areas and choices. They can also be accepted to the master’s and later PhD programs in sociology in Turkish or other foreign universities in order to pursue an academic career.
Qualification Requirements and Regulations
The qualification of SOCIOLOG is obtained upon graduation from the programme SOCIOLOGY, which requires;
Completion of all the courses designated within the curriculum of the programme, having a total of 240 ECTS credits, with passing grades.
Achievement of a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of at least 2.00 out of 4.00.

Access to Further Studies
Upon successful completion of this programme, students may apply to master’s (second cycle) and in some cases, to doctorate (third cycle) degree programs in or related fields of SOCIOLOGY. According to the National Regulations on Graduate Education, students are admitted to master’s programmes taking into account their undergraduate (first cycle degree) achievement level and the scores on the subject-specific entrance examinations of the Graduate Education Entrance Examination (ALES) centrally administered by the Student Selection and Placement Centre (ÖSYM). Within the framework of the national regulations, regulations endorsed by the senate of each university stipulate the weight of ALES Examination results in the overall evaluation of candidates. Depending on the institutions’ regulations, for some programmes to be accessed, a certain level of foreign language proficiency is also required.

Examinations
The success of students in achieving the expected leaning outcomes of the each course unit within the curriculum of SOCIOLOGY programme is evaluated via assessments of in-term activities and final examination which takes place at the end of each semester.
Assessment of in-term activities includes a minimum number of a mid-term examination, homework and a short-exam (quiz) as compulsory assessment methods for all the course units within all degree programmes defined by the Regulations. The programmes are encouraged to define more assessment methods for the in-term activities depending on their needs for measuring the achievements of the outcomes at the programme and course unit levels in order to ensure the educational aims and objectives. The nature and number of the assessment methods used for each course unit together with their contribution the final grades are given under the title of “Assessment and Grading” in the sections of course descriptions. These arrangements are announced in advance, at the beginning of each semester and published in the sections of the course descriptions on this web site.
Mid-term and final examinations are conducted in dates, places and times determined and announced by the University. The students’ final semester grade is given by their instructors based on mid-term examination, homework evaluation, short-examinations, final examination and, if there is any other assessment results taking into account the students’ compliance with attendance to the course activities.
The contributions of the grades of the in-term activities and final exam grade to the final success grade of a course are determined by the course instructor and announced to students within the first two weeks of the semester. Moreover, the contribution of the final exam cannot be less than 40 % and higher than 60% for all the courses within all the degree programmes defined by the Regulations.
Course units, which do not require a mid-term, homework, short-exam and/or a final exam, such as work placement, are determined by the administration of the related departments and specific assessment and grading methods for these courses are also announced through the same channels described above. Evaluation of such activities is made through the procedures defined by the Senate and assessed by Pass (P) or Fail (F) grades.
Grading
The success of a student for each assessment (in-term and final) defined for each course unit is evaluated by the instructor. Evaluations are made over a scale of 100 points and converted to the letter grades at the end of the semester taking into account the standard deviation of grades and grade point average of the class and using the relative evaluation method, principles of which have been set by the Senate.

Graduation Requirements
In order for a student to graduate from the SOCIOLOGY programme the following conditions must be met:
