Nowadays, the energy need of the communities has been rapidly increasing. Increased use of technological tools and equipment including the motor vehicles as a result of the industrial and technological development of Western societies in 19th century is the main reason for this energy need. The mentioned energy has been largely provided by fossil fuels and with the rapid increase in world population has given rise to consume more fossil fuels. The use of these fuels lead to two main problems i.e. environmental problems and limited reserves. The second problem is the main reason for the today’s energy wars between countries.
In order to reduce the dependency on fossil fuels, many countries- particularly more developed countries - have accelerated efforts to find new sources of energy. These renewable sources are mainly solar energy, wind energy, hydropower, wave energy, geothermal and biological energy, and especially hydrogen energy which has been considered particularly in more developed countries. The major advantages of these technologies are that they can provide sustainable and environmentally friendly energy.
Our country is rich in the renewable energy sources mentioned above as a result of its geographical location and geological structure. Therefore, these renewable energy sources have to be used very effectively in order to reduce our dependence on foreign energy, to compete with developed countries and to take place at the forefront of world politics. To be a part of this effort and provide added value to our country, intensive work plans have been foreseen.
The studies on the renewable energy and especially on the hydrogen energy and fuel cells at Nigde Omer Halisdemir University initiated almost fifteen years ago with encourage and support of Prof. Dr. T. Nejat Veziroglu. As a result of the scientific studies performed together with academicians from several departments in the university, many national and international projects on the hydrogen technologies and fuel cells have successfully completed. Furthermore, Dr. Veziroglu has brought our university and one of the leading companies in our country, LENTATEK, together which has led to the launch of joint projects. One of the main topic of this collaboration is solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) which have high energy conversion efficiency and fuel flexibility. LENTATEK and Nigde Omer Halisdemir University carried out joint work since 2006 in order to commercialize this technology and built the first SOFC prototype of our country which can produce net 3 kW electrical energy. All auxiliary system elements have been also developed by the partners.
Prof. Dr. T. Nejat Veziroglu Clean Energy Research Center (DrV-CERC) was established for further development of the system, to take its place in the international arena and to put all renewable energy R & D activities together under one roof. This establishment under the title of Prof. Dr. T. Nejat Veziroglu, who allow us to meet in the field of renewable energy with hydrogen, is well known in the international community adopted the hydrogen and served as the chairman of the World Hydrogen Energy Association for many years, has a significant meaning for us.
The main target of our center with the knowledge of that the energy is the key issue for the development and the provision of world peace is the development of renewable energy technologies. The other objectives are improving the R&D studies on clean energy, to make related industrial organization gain new technologies on renewable energy and improving the collaborative multidisciplinary studies in our university. Moreover, the cooperation with national and international centers and universities is also targeted, and national and international institutions and organizations are intended to bring together. Thus, it is aimed to become a worldwide significant organization who is one of the national and international policy makers in the field of energy and developing project. We invite all researchers who just entered the energy field, students, scientists, public officials, industrialists, universities, ministries, energy consumers and producers and everyone from Turkey or abroad to our center.
