Understanding the biology of importnat crops species is very important to understand the basic concepts in plant breeding and genetic and biotechnology. This course will give some basic biologiacl information of the plants. It will cover the flower biology and structure of flowers of important crop species with examples such as flowers structures of cereals and legumes, funtions of flowers, reproductive systems, basic concepts of pollination biology, role and importance of pollinators, types of pollination, Monoecious Plants, Dioecious Plants, Gynoecious Plants, Pollination and Fertilization, Pollinating Agents, Why Is Cross-Pollination Important, Pollination Syndromes.

The objective of this course is to give an overview of general information about the principal of classical, molecular and population genetics. It presents principles and methods used in the study of genetics. This course will cover the origion of genetics and molecular biology, plant reproductive biology, structure of DNA and RNA, review of cell division, mitosis and meiosis, genes are made of DNA, Mendelian genetics, laws of segragation, law of independent assortment.

The course will include the basic terminology and biological phenomena of evolution. It will consist of definition of evolution, why, where and when cultivated crops get evoluted, selection and evolution, history and evolution of different crop species, Fertile crescent as a cradle of agriculture, wheat evolution, barley evolution, maize evolution, potato evolution, chickpea, lentil and faba bean evolution, evolution and most important domestication and diversity centers in world, domestication of different important crops in Turkey, importance of polyploidy in evolution.

This course will give students basic ideas to the new field of proteomics. It will help students to undersatnd the fundamental basic of proteomics. The lectures will include about the definition of proteins, structure and chemistry of protein molecule, protein synthesis, amino acid sturcture and types of amino acid, functions of protein families, gene expression and protein, application of proteomics in different fields.

This lecture will give idea about the basics of plant genomics. It will include different tools of plant genomics, basic terminology, what are genes and DNA, definition and origion of genome, types of genome, importance of genome study, genome in 20th century, science of genomics, introduction to genomic labortaries, different areas of plant genomics with examples from different crops, Bioinformatics: computational analysis of genomics data, Genome size and gene number in different crops, genome sequencing, Functional Genomics, Genomics applied to agriculture, Farm-animal genomics, Ethical issues raised by genomics, Molecualr markers and their use in gene mapping, markers linked with different traits, apllication of mlecular markers in plant breeding, gene expression, gene cloning.

The aim of the subject is to train students in practical plant micropropagation. The students will be introduced to tissue culture labortary. The course generally will cover topics on introduction and purpose of tissue culture in plants. The chemicals and mineral used in preparation of culture media and their properties. Prepration different stock solutions for tissue culture nutrient medium. Sterilization techniques in tissue culture, preparation of explant for tissue culture. Introduction to embryo culture, uses in different fields, organogenesis and regeneration via in vitro plant cell, tissue and organ culture, Protoplast culture, anther culture, calluss culture, Meristem culture, regeneration methods of plants in culture, organogenesis, direct organogenesis and indirect organogenesi, Micropropagation.
