The Department of Archeology and History of Art, one of the first departments founded under the Faculty of Science and Letters at Niğde University, was established by Professor Beyhan KARAMAĞARALI in 1995. In 2010 it was named as Department of History of Art. The Art History Department of Niğde Ömer Halisdemir University only offers B.A. degree. (an undergraduate program) It is based on a four-year study program which is supported in the first and second semesters by compulsory/obligatory/must courses such as “History of Art”, “History of Architecture”, “Mythology”, “History of the Ancient World and Civilization”, which provide significant background skills for art history research along with the “Fundamentals of Information Technology”, “Turkish Language”, “Atatürk's Principles and History of Turkish Revolution”. In the second year besides field work like “Excavations and Surveys”, “Technical drawing and studio works”, students also take courses such as “Western Art”, “Pre Islam Turkish Art”, “Islamic Painting”, “Turkish Art and Archeology”. In the third year students take “Turkish Painting”, “Anatolian Seljukid and Emirates Art”, “Turkish Traditional Handicrafts” courses. In the fourth and last year students are expected to write their Graduation Thesis besides taking the courses of “Ottoman Art”, “Turkish Tile and Ceramic Art” and “Museology”. Students who are successful in their viva will graduate as “art historian”. In our department are there one Associate Professor, two Assistant Professors and two Research Assistants.
