General Information

Nigde Omer Halisdemir University Nigde Zubeyde Hanim School of Health started education in 1996-1997 Academic Year in accordance with the protocol no. 22805 signed between Ministry of Health and Board of Higher Education in 22.11.1996 and being based on the fact that the Schools of Health, being established instead of the Vocational Schools of Health that were within the body of Ministry of Health by virtue of the decision of High Council of Health dated 23.05.1995 and numbered 185/1, were to carry on their education in vocational high school buildings of the General Directorate of Health Education. The Department of Midwifery was established and admitted students in 1999. There is an Assistant Professor and two Research Assistants in our department.

Within the project of ERASMUS/LLP, our department exchanges the students and academic staff. In 2014-2015 Academic year 45 students matriculated our department. The students, who provide the admission requirements, are admitted to our department by lateral or vertical transfer. Our graduates, provided that they pass Public Personnel Selection Examination, may find employment as midwives in personnel cadre of Ministry of Health. In addition, they can easily get a job in private sector due to the job vacancy of the qualified personnel in health sector.

To be able to graduate from our department, our students have to fulfill the following criteria in the field of practice during their educational period.

  1. To be a consultant to pregnant women in a way that encompasses at least 100 prenatal examinations
  2. To look after and observe at least 40 pregnant women
  3. To carry out at least 40 birth events; If this number cannot be reached due to the insufficient number of pregnant women, provided that the students help 20 birth events, this number can be decreased to at least 30 births
  4. They should participate in breech birth. If breech birth isn’t available, they should work on it with simulation
  5. To practice episiotomy and to start with a stitch. It consists of this theoretic information and clinical practice. Practice of stitch consists of stitching after episiotomy or perianal detachment. If necessary, this condition can be carried out with simulation
  6. To look after and observe 40 women who are at risk during pregnancy or birth or after birth
  7. To look after and observe at least 100 puerperant women (mothers after birth) and health newborn babies (including consultation).
  8. To look after and observe newborn babies including premature babies, postmature babies or babies with low weight at birth or ill babies who need special care.
  9. To look after women who have gynecological and obstetric pathology
  10. To participate in medical and surgical care. This should consist of theoretic information and clinical practice.

The students, on condition that at least % 60 of the values which are given above are attained (apart from birth deliver) are decided to be graduate from the department by the commission in the areas in which these numbers cannot be reached.

Aims and Objectives

Aims :

  1. To evaluate the women throughout all stages of life in terms of reproductive health
  2. To identify abnormalities in terms of reproductive health
  3. To provide the necessary care and consultancy services during pregnancy
  4. To provide birth deliver in a healthy way in normal delivery
  5. To do maternal and newborn care during the postpartum period
  6. To diagnose risk factors and abnormalities during preconception, pregnancy, birth process, and the postpartum periods beforehand
  7. To attend birth control practices
  8. To develop social aspects, communication skills, creativity and entrepreneurship
  9. To contribute to the development of knowledge specific to the field
  10. To make necessary birth control consultancy in order to improve maternal and child health
  11. To collaborate with the other disciplines in midwifery training, management and research

Objectives : 
  1. To deal with woman and her family by a holistic approach during preconception, pregnancy, birth process, and postpartum periods
  2. To understand the importance of maternal health
  3. To protect, sustain and develop the physical, psychological and social health of the mother and newborn beginning from the intra uterine period
  4. To enable mothers and their families to take responsibility of their own health care.
  5. To adopt main theories, concepts, principles and methods of midwifery
  6. To integrate health practices into their lives
  7. To diagnose risk factors and abnormalities during preconception, pregnancy, birth process and postpartum periods beforehand
  8. To make use of nursing, educational, and consultancy services to recuperate and maintain health
  9. To make necessary birth control consultancy in order to improve maternal and child health
  10. To make use of conveyor chain in necessary situations
  11. To make use of management skills in planning, executing and evaluating midwifery services together with true communication skills and awareness of professional roles and responsibilities
  12. To collaborate with other disciplines in midwifery training, management and research
  13. To make use of conveyor chain in necessary situations

Level of Qualification and Qualification Awarded

Upon successful completion of this programme, students are awarded with the qualification of BACHELOR OF SCIENCE DEGREE in MIDWIFERY.

A Bachelor's Degree Program in MIDWIFERY  is a 240 ECTS Credits, 4-year program. The program  meets the requirements by both the ECTS credits and level descriptors of the first cycle degree qualifications of the Overarching Framework of European Qualifications Framework HE(QF-EHEA) and the 6th level qualifications of the Turkish Qualifications Framework for HE (TYYÇ, NQF-HETR). The level descriptors also meet the 6th level requirements of  the qualifications of the European Qualifications Framework for Lifelong Learning (EQF-LLL).

Specific Admission Requirements

Admission of national students to the MIDWIFERY  program is contingent on success on the nationally centralized Student Selection Examination (OSYS) conducted by the Student Selection and Placement Centre (OSYM). Candidates who succeed on the YGS (ENTRANCE EXAM in Higher Education) are enrolled according to their type YGS-2 score preferences.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning

With an understanding of lifelong learning, Nigde Omer Halisdemir University  recognizes the previously taken courses in another institution and exempt them from graduation credit, as long as the courses match with the learning outcomes of the registered programme at Nigde Omer Halisdemir University. The learning outcome match and the exemption are decided by the School Board in line with the related laws and regulations.

Profile of the Programme 

Undergraduate (Bachelor's Degree) program in Midwifery (First Cycle in QF-EHEA and  6th level in TYYÇ )  is an academically-oriented program giving access to degree and non-degree research program and professional practice demanding high levels of knowledge and skills.     Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

    Our graduates, provided that they pass Public Personnel Selection Examination, may find employment as midwives in personnel cadre of Ministry of Health. They may also have an academic career by matriculating in related M.Sc. and Ph.D. programmes of the universities in Turkey or abroad.

    The qualification of MIDWIFERY  is obtained upon graduation from the programme MIDWIFERY , which requires;

    • Completion of all the courses designated within the curriculum of the programme, having a total of 240 ECTS Credits, with passing grades.
    • Achievement of a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of at least 2.00 out of 4.00.
    • Completion of with a 55 working days (16 ECTS credits) of the summer practice

    Access to Further Studies

    Upon successful completion of this programme, students may apply to master’s (second cycle) and in some cases, to doctorate (third cycle) degree programs in or related fields of MIDWIFERY. According to the National Regulations on Graduate Education, students are admitted to master’s programmes taking into account their undergraduate (first cycle degree) achievement level and the scores on the subject-specific entrance examinations of the Graduate Education Entrance Examination (ALES) centrally administered by the Student Selection and Placement Centre (OSYM). Within the framework of the national regulations, regulations endorsed by the senate of each university stipulate the weight of ALES Examination results in the overall evaluation of candidates. Depending on the institutions’ regulations, for some programmes to be accessed, a certain level of foreign language proficiency is also required.

    Examinations:

    The success of students in achieving the expected leaning outcomes of the each course unit within the curriculum of MIDWIFERY programme is evaluated via assessments of in-term activities and final examination which takes place at the end of each semester.

    Assessment of in-term activities includes a minimum number of a mid-term examination, homework and a short-exam (quiz) as compulsory assessment methods for all the course units within all degree programmes defined by the Regulations. The programmes are encouraged to define more assessment methods for the in-term activities depending on their needs for measuring the achievements of the outcomes at the programme and course unit levels in order to ensure the educational aims and objectives. The nature and number of the assessment methods used for each course unit together with their contribution the final grades are given under the title of “Assessment and Grading” in the sections of course descriptions. These arrangements are announced in advance, at the beginning of each semester and published in the sections of the course descriptions on this web site.

    Mid-term and final examinations are conducted in dates, places and times determined and announced by the University. The students’ final semester grade is given by their instructors based on mid-term examination, homework evaluation, short-examinations, final examination and, if there is any other assessment results taking into account the students’ compliance with attendance to the course activities.

    The contributions of the grades of the in-term activities and final exam grade to the final success grade of a course are determined by the course instructor and announced to students within the first two weeks of the semester. Moreover, the contribution of the final exam cannot be less than 40 % and higher than 60% for all the courses within all the degree programmes defined by the Regulations.

    Course units, which do not require a mid-term, homework, short-exam and/or a final exam, such as work placement, are determined by the administration of the related departments and specific assessment and grading methods for these courses are also announced through the same channels described above. Evaluation of such activities is made through the procedures defined by the Senate and assessed by Pass (P) or Fail (F) grades.

    Grading:

    The success of a student for each assessment (in-term and final) defined for each course unit is evaluated by the instructor. Evaluations are made over a scale of 100 points and converted to the letter grades at the end of the semester taking into account the standard deviation of grades and grade point average of the class and using the relative evaluation method, principles of which have been set by the Senate.
