The Department of Western Languages and Literatures, founded with the establishment of our university in 1992, aims to provide academic education in the fields of language, culture and literature at both undergraduate and graduate levels, and enrich this educational process with the minor programs planned to be opened and conduct research in the field. As it is to introduce and teach Western culture and literatures in our globalising world, it also aims to strengthen comparative, analytical and critical thinking abilities, equipping its students with the knowledge of literary theories, and to ensure that they continue qualified studies on literary texts. The courses offered in the Department of Western Languages and Literatures, such as mass communication, literary language analysis, translation, language-culture relationship, critical theories, and linguistics, prepare students for their graduate programs and professional careers. Students who graduate from our department are trained as individuals who are able to follow the social, cultural, and political structure in the Western world with their historical developments, as well as to follow the developments in the world of thought and art in a foreign language. Another goal of our department is also to enable students to use a second foreign language outside of their own discipline. Therefore, our department students will be able to learn a second foreign language during their education. Our graduate students, who have received the Pedagogical Graduate Training Formation certificate, can work as a teacher in educational institutions, colleges, and also in the staff of the Ministry of National Education if they are qualified by participating KPSS exams. In addition, our graduates can find some alternative professional opportunities in the fields requiring advanced level of English language, culture and literature knowledge, such as the tourism sector, Foreign Ministry, Ministry of Culture and Tourism, banks, TRT and private media institutions, translation, copywriting in the advertising sector, and editor in publishing houses. Furthermore, when they fulfil the necessary conditions, they have wide job opportunities, such as lectureship and academic career at state and foundation universities.
