Founded in 2021 at the meeting of the Ministers of Education of the member countries of the Cooperation Council of Turkic Speaking Countries (Turkic Council), which was renamed the Organisation of Turkic States in 2013, TURKUNIB (Union of Turkic Universities) was established in 2013. The Organisation of Turkic States, of which Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Uzbekistan and Turkey are members, ensures the development and institutionalisation of cooperation among Turkic States in many fields such as political, economic, sociocultural, trade, transport and education.

TURKUNIB, on the other hand, ensures the development of cooperation between higher education institutions in the Turkic States. As of 2023, 43 universities from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkey and Hungary are members of the Union of Turkic Universities, which is expanding with the participation of other universities to TURKUNIB every year.
