Course Objective

Brief Content of the Course

Within the framework of this course, pre-Socratic political thought is first examined in the context of thinkers such as Thales, Heraclitus, Pythagoras, Parmenides, Empedocles, Democritus, and Protagoras, who were located around the Mediterranean region. Subsequently, the fundamental propositions and thought patterns of Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle, as three major actors of Classical Greek political thought, as well as the Cynic Diogenes, are evaluated. Political thoughts that were influenced by the events in the Hellenistic period, which extended from the 4th century BC to the birth of Christianity, and especially Stoicism and Epicureanism, are examined around thinkers such as Zeno of Citium, Epicurus, Philo, Polybius, Cicero, and Seneca. After evaluating how the religious reinterpretation of Plato in the early Christian period shaped political thought in the context of Plutarch and Plotinus, medieval political thought is examined around Saint Augustine, al-Farabi, Avicenna, John of Salisbury, Thomas Aquinas, Dante, William of Ockham, and Ibn Khaldun, with political thoughts belonging to the Early Middle Ages, High Middle Ages, Scholasticism, and Late Middle Ages periods.
