Course Objectives 
1To introduce primary sources and copyrighted works on Roman and Byzantine history.
2To introduce the geography of Italy and its prehistoric cultures.
3To discuss the legendary elements of Rome's founding, to understand Rome's transition from a small settlement to the Kingdom and the end of this period.
4To teach and discuss the relations between Rome and its neighbors on the Italian Peninsula during the Roman Republic, Roman institutions, class struggles in Rome, Rome's expansion in the Mediterranean, the Triumvirate period, civil wars, and the transition to the imperial period.
5The Early Empire (Principatus) period, the Crisis of the Third Century, the Germanic invasions, and the establishment of the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire, as well as the influence of Rome on Europe and the modern world after the collapse of the Western Roman Empire.
6The Eastern Roman Empire-Christianity relations, the early relations between the Eastern Roman Empire and the Islamic world, learning about and discussing Byzantine institutions.
7To teach and discuss to Iconoclasm, the relations between the Eastern Roman Empire and the Turks, as well as the relations between the Eastern Roman Empire and the Italian Maritime States.
8To teach and discuss the significance of the Crusades for the Eastern Roman Empire and Catholic-Orthodox relations.
