Course Objective
To create a sustainable environment and build reliable structures on soils, it is crucial to obtain accurate soil parameters through laboratory and field tests and to understand the soil type. For example, knowing soil behavior (liquefaction, landslides, etc.) ensures the stability of structures during earthquakes or climate change-related disasters. This reduces the need for demolition and reconstruction, thus supporting environmental and economic sustainability. Soil surveys determine groundwater levels and flow, preventing construction processes from damaging groundwater resources. Considering these and similar aspects, obtaining soil parameters and understanding soils from a sustainability perspective is one of the fundamental aims of this course.
Brief Content of the Course
This course covers the fundamental principles of soil mechanics and foundation engineering. Students will learn about soil properties, classification, bearing capacity, foundation types, and sustainable geotechnical solutions for green buildings. By conveying the core principles of soil mechanics and foundation engineering, this course provides engineering students with a critical theoretical foundation. Students taking this course will learn to correctly classify the layers on which structures will be built by thoroughly examining the engineering properties of soils. Throughout the course, the mathematical and physical relationships between different foundation types and the bearing capacity of soils will be comprehensively discussed. Students will gain knowledge about modern and sustainable geotechnical solution methods for constructing environmentally friendly green buildings.
