Earthquake Conference Held at Our University

"1-7 March Earthquake Week Earthquake Conference" was held at our university on the occasion of 1-7 March Earthquake Week.

Our Vice Rector Prof. attended the conference held at our Martyr Ömer Halisdemir Congress and Culture Center with intense participation. Dr. Yağmur Şener, many protocol members, guests and students attended.

Our faculty member, Faculty of Engineering, Department of Geological Engineering, Prof. Dr. It started with the opening speech of Mustafa Korkanç and our faculty member of the Faculty of Engineering, Department of Geological Engineering, Assoc. Dr. At the conference, which continued with Alper Gürbüz's presentation titled "Turkey's Seismicity", our Faculty of Architecture Department of Architecture faculty member Dr. Lecturer Member Hakan Karaca made a presentation titled "Earthquake Regulation and Preparation of New Earthquake Maps" and finally Niğde Provincial Disaster and Emergency Manager Selami Kılıçel made a presentation titled "Precautions to be Taken Before, During and After the Earthquake".

Our faculty member, Faculty of Engineering, Department of Geological Engineering, Prof. Dr. In his opening speech, Mustafa Korkanç stated that even medium-sized earthquakes in our country cause great damage and loss of life, especially in structures located in rural areas, and among the most important reasons for this are; He stated that the process from site selection to building design, building production and inspection was not designed well enough.

“In our country where we have to live with earthquakes; In order to prevent natural events from turning into disasters, to prevent social suffering from occurring again, to ensure that our people live in earthquake-resistant buildings, and to minimize the loss of life and property, new settlements should not be determined without geological-geotechnical studies that will form the basis of the zoning plan, and all island and parcel-based constructions should not be carried out without engineering services. "No application should be licensed, risky areas should not be developed, site selection should be based on scientific norms, and unqualified building production should be prevented urgently," said Prof. Dr. Mustafa Korkanç concluded his statements by giving detailed information about our University's Disaster Education and Management Application and Research Center.

Our faculty member, Faculty of Engineering, Department of Geological Engineering, Assoc. Dr. In his presentation titled "Turkey's Seismicity", Alper Gürbüz emphasized that Turkey is located in a region where many plates intersect, and that this is why earthquakes are quite common in our region.

Referring to the earthquake that occurred in Niğde in 2020, Assoc. Dr. Alper Gürbüz also stated that the seismicity in the Niğde region is related to the Tuz Gölü Fault Zone and the Ecemiş Fault Zone.

Our faculty member, Department of Architecture, Faculty of Architecture, Dr. Lecturer Member Hakan Karaca started his presentation titled "Earthquake Regulation and Preparation of New Earthquake Maps" by stating that new information is obtained as a result of each earthquake and that this information, which has been confirmed and confirmed in laboratories, should be disseminated and used to prevent possible losses in other earthquakes.

Continuing his statements, Dr. said, "We, academics and engineers, are in a race to save lives." Lecturer Member Hakan Karaca shared detailed information about the 2018 Earthquake Regulation with the program participants. Dr. also made statements about earthquake levels and ground amplification. Lecturer Member Hakan Karaca added that buildings built according to the old earthquake regulations can be retrofitted in accordance with the new earthquake regulations.

Niğde Provincial Disaster and Emergency Manager Selami Kılıçel, in her presentation titled "Precautions to be Taken Before, During and After the Earthquake", talked about the vital precautions to be taken before the earthquake and the benefits of these measures, the life-saving maneuvers to be done during the earthquake and the precautions to be taken afterwards. conveyed important information to program participants.

Niğde Provincial Disaster and Emergency Manager Selami Kılıçel also shared with the audience the work carried out by AFAD.

At the end of the program, our Faculty of Engineering Department of Geological Engineering faculty member Prof. Dr. A certificate of appreciation was presented by Mehmet Şener.
