A conference titled "The Effects of Disasters on People" was organized by our Disaster Education and Management Application and Research Center at our university. Our University Faculty Member Prof. was the speaker at the conference. Dr. Bülent Kara, Prof. Dr. Yavuz Sürme, Assoc. Dr. Nalan Gördeles Beşer and Dr. Lecturer Member Çiğdem Samancı Tekin discussed the individual and social effects of disasters within the framework of different disciplines, from sociology to psychology, from health to the environment.
Our Vice Rector Prof. attended the conference held at our Martyr Ömer Halisdemir Congress and Culture Center. Dr. Ersin Aydın, Disaster Education and Management Application and Research Center Director Prof. Dr. Mustafa Korkanç, academic and administrative unit managers, our staff and students attended.
Making the opening speech of the conference, Korkanç touched on the psychological effects of disasters such as earthquakes, floods and fires, recalling the Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquakes that occurred on February 6, 2023.
Korkanç continued his speech and said: ''For the last two years, in the organization of the Disaster Training and Management Application and Research Center, disaster awareness trainings have been provided with the AFAD Provincial Directorate, as well as the seismicity of the region and the effects of earthquakes on structures, in cooperation with the Geology and Civil Engineering and Architecture departments. has been discussed several times. Today, we planned to talk about the effects of disasters on people with an interdisciplinary approach. Disasters can occur in many different ways and cause serious damage, loss of life and psychological effects. These disasters, which threaten people's lives and living spaces, affect individuals deeply and for a long time. On the other hand, disasters often lead to increased feelings of solidarity and cooperation between individuals and societies. People come together, help each other and support each other in these difficult times. At the same time, disasters offer us the opportunity to make new beginnings and create a more resilient society. As a result, disasters of different types are events that leave deep effects on people. Therefore, in this event, our professors will discuss the physical, psychological and social effects of disasters. On this occasion, I would like to take this opportunity to thank our Rector, Prof., who always supports such activities of our Center.
