Biodiversity Conservation and Ecosystem Health Policies
Niğde Ömer Halisdemir University is committed to contributing to the preservation of aquatic ecosystems to leave a better world for future generations. Oceans, rivers, and water basins, which constitute a significant portion of the world’s ecosystems, directly or indirectly impact human life. The university’s policy on the Protection of Marine and Aquatic Environments encompasses the following measures:
- Niğde Ömer Halisdemir University offers and conducts educational programs on the protection of water ecosystems, sustainable livestock practices, and various agricultural production activities, engaging local, regional, or national stakeholders.
- It organizes or supports activities related to the conservation and sustainability of water ecosystems, taking action in waste management and awareness initiatives with an integrated approach.
- Scientific studies are carried out in collaboration with public authorities to identify, protect, and manage sensitive areas within marine and aquatic environments, contributing to the development of relevant legislation.
- The university undertakes essential efforts for local ecosystem conservation and produces academic/scientific outputs at national and international levels.
- In alignment with the objectives of sustainable terrestrial life, Niğde Ömer Halisdemir University prioritizes the preservation and sustainable use of its lands, the conservation of existing ecosystems and biodiversity, and the elimination and recycling of waste in pursuit of a zero-waste goal.
- The university supports or organizes activities aimed at promoting the protection and sustainable use of campus lands. Research, development, and production-sales activities related to product diversity and productivity are conducted within a sustainable agriculture framework.
- The university protects existing ecosystems and biodiversity within its areas and offers educational programs on ecosystems to local and national communities. Training programs or community service programs are also organized on sustainable land management for agriculture and tourism.
- Research and rehabilitation efforts are conducted to support designated forest areas, including reforestation of fire-damaged zones and planting efforts with fast-growing species and native endemic plant varieties.
- Precautions are taken to prevent harm to species due to campus operations or new constructions. Planning efforts are undertaken to enhance local biodiversity and mitigate the impact of non-native species on campus.
- The university collaborates with local authorities (municipalities) for the discharge of wastewater in its campuses and develops policies to reduce plastic waste on campus. Plans are made for the disposal of hazardous materials, including hazardous waste management.
- Academic studies and biodiversity observations are conducted on campus, and 226 bird species have been identified within this framework. Among these, the critically endangered White-headed Duck (Oxyura leucocephala) and Common Pochard (Aythya ferina), listed on the International IUCN Red List, have been observed. Additionally, the Turtle Dove (Streptopelia turtur), another endangered species, breeds in the wooded areas surrounding the reservoir, with species-specific monitoring continuing. Activities and implementations focused on sustainable water management, waste management, and ecosystem health standards are carried out to ensure the survival of these species and the preservation of biodiversity.
- Niğde Ömer Halisdemir University has carried out and continues to carry out highly successful efforts on the protection and sustainable use of terrestrial life at both national and international levels.
- The university adopts environmentally sensitive approaches in its agricultural activities on university lands. Pesticides used are selected to minimize adverse effects on ecosystems and maintain natural balance. Additionally, efficient irrigation methods, such as drip irrigation, are preferred to maximize water conservation, ensuring the sustainable use of water resources while minimizing environmental impacts in agricultural production.
- Niğde Ömer Halisdemir University will regularly conduct monitoring and maintenance activities to protect and enhance the ecosystems surrounding the campus. Biological control programs will be implemented to prevent invasive species from entering the ecosystem, prioritizing the preservation of the natural balance of local species. In addition, reforestation efforts will be carried out annually, and scientific projects will be supported to promote local plant species. These actions reflect the university’s long-term commitment to safeguarding ecosystem health.
- The university offers and organizes education and activities related to the conservation of aquatic ecosystems and promotes sustainable animal husbandry and agricultural production.
- Scientific studies and partnerships with public institutions are conducted to identify, protect, and manage sensitive marine and aquatic areas.
- The university undertakes necessary actions for local ecosystem conservation and produces academic/scientific outputs at national and international levels.
- Biodiversity assessments are conducted, with 226 bird species identified on campus, including endangered species. Sustainable water management, waste management, and ecosystem health measures support the preservation of these species.
- Niğde Ömer Halisdemir University continues to lead in protecting terrestrial life and promoting sustainable use at the national and international levels.
