This course includes the basis of classifying the small ruminant husbandry, types of production systems: pastoral, agro-pastoral and commercial, production systems of small ruminants, main characteristics of flocks and performance, feeding calendar, marketing of animal products, constraints to production, opportunities for improving production.

This course will present a distinctive and exhaustive knowledge on mitigation practices for greenhouse gas emissions in the livestock sector. It will focus specifically on nonCO2 emissions from enteric fermentation and manure management. By teaching emission reduction interventions for the sector the students will also get a detailed understanding of their effect on factors such as costs, competitiveness and risks incurred by stakeholders along the supply chain, but also of their impact on other environmental goods and services such as water resources or biodiversity. This broader evaluation will help to craft interventions that can deliver multiple societal objectives of the sector, which include food security, economic development and environmental sustainability.
