“AGRICULTURAL SCIENCE CAFE – CABBAGE DISEASES EVENT”
This event was organized to provide scientific and practical information about diseases encountered in cabbage cultivation to producers, students, and relevant stakeholders. The event aimed to help participants learn to identify plant diseases, make accurate diagnoses, and develop effective control methods. Furthermore, increasing knowledge sharing between the university and producers, transferring academic knowledge to the field, and increasing young people's interest in agriculture were among the important objectives of the event. As part of the event, Prof. Dr. Eminur ELÇİ gave a comprehensive oral presentation on "Cabbage Diseases." The presentation covered fungal, bacterial, and viral diseases commonly seen in cabbage cultivation in detail. Environmental factors, climatic conditions, and incorrect agricultural practices affecting the development of these diseases were discussed. The importance of correctly identifying disease symptoms was also emphasized; symptoms seen on leaves, roots, and stems were explained with examples. The negative effects of diseases on product yield and quality were evaluated, and attention was drawn to the economic losses that producers may face. The presentation then detailed methods that can be applied in disease control. This included:
• Cultural control methods (crop rotation, use of resistant varieties, hygiene practices),
• Biological control methods,
• Chemical control methods and correct pesticide use.
Participants were given information on these topics. The importance of sustainable agricultural practices and environmentally friendly methods was particularly emphasized. The event was not limited to theoretical explanations; it was conducted in an interactive environment where participants actively engaged in the process. Participants asked questions about topics they were curious about and shared problems they encountered in the field, discussing potential solutions.
