General Information
The thesis master's program in the Department of Geography was opened in 2023 under the Social Sciences Institute of Niğde Ömer Halisdemir University. The geography master's program with thesis carries out educational activities with 1 professor, 2 associate professors and 2 doctor faculty members who conduct both national and international research in different fields of geography.
Aims and Goals
Aims
1- The main purpose of the program is to increase students' knowledge in the field of geography and develop their analytical thinking skills. In this way, students gain the ability to analyze complex geographical problems.
2- The program aims to provide students with the ability to conduct independent research. Thesis studies provide students with the opportunity to plan, implement and present their own research in the field of geography.
3- The program not only helps students understand the basic concepts and theories of geography, but also helps them gain critical thinking about them. This allows them to develop an in-depth understanding of geography.
4- The program offers students the opportunity to specialize in different application areas of geography. These areas include options such as environmental management, watershed planning, geographic information systems (GIS), urban planning and regional development.
Goals
1- The program aims to provide students with high-level academic knowledge about the most current theories, methods and applications of geography.
2- Students have the opportunity to produce new knowledge and contribute to geographical literature through their thesis studies.
3- The program aims to provide students with the skills to define, analyze and solve complex geographical problems.
4- Students improve their collaboration and communication skills through interactive learning opportunities such as group projects and seminars.
5- The program aims to create a foundation on which graduates can work successfully in the private sector, public sector and non-governmental organizations, as well as their academic careers in the field of geography.
Degree Awarded
Students who successfully complete the program are awarded a Master's degree in Geography.
Level
The Department of Geography master's program is a 2-year program consisting of 120 ECTS credits. The program is ECTS determined for the "Second Level (First Cycle)" qualifications defined in the "European Qualifications Framework for Higher Education (QF-EHEA)" of the Bologna Process and the "7th Level" qualifications defined in the "Turkish Higher Education Qualifications Framework (TYYÇ)". credit conditions and level qualifications; It also provides "Level 7" qualifications defined in the "European Lifelong Learning Qualifications Framework (EQF-LLL)".
Admission Conditions
Admission conditions are decided in accordance with the regulations determined by the Turkish Higher Education Council. Information about the requirements for application and acceptance to master's programs is announced on the university's website at the beginning of each academic year. The following conditions apply to both Turkish and foreign students:
• Having a bachelor's degree,
• Having received at least 55 points (or equivalent) from ALES (Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Entrance Examination),
• Proficiency in national level YDS (Foreign Language Proficiency Test) YÖKDİL (Higher Education Institutions Foreign Language Examination) or international level IELTS (International English Testing System) or TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) foreign language exams accepted by the Interuniversity Board. to have received. Students who do not have foreign language proficiency can apply, but their scores in this field will be evaluated as 0.
• Candidates who have received a Bachelor's Degree abroad must obtain an equivalence certificate from the Council of Higher Education.
• ALES score is valid for 5 years.
• Candidates must apply in person. Applications with incomplete documents will not be evaluated.
In order for the candidate to enter the Thesis Master's programs to be considered successful, his undergraduate graduation GPA and ALES score, as well as his foreign language score, if any, are evaluated. Foreign language is not a threshold or prerequisite for applying to master's programs. In the calculation of success, the foreign language score of candidates who do not have a foreign language score is considered zero. Master's degree entrance success grade is the sum of 35% of the undergraduate graduation grade point average, 50% of the ALES score and 15% of the foreign language score. Recognition of Prior Learning
Based on the principle of lifelong learning, Niğde Ömer Halisdemir University recognizes courses previously taken at another institution and exempts them from graduation credits if the learning outcomes of these courses are compatible with the programs registered at Niğde Ömer Halisdemir University. Compatibility of learning outcomes and exemption issues are decided by the Institute Board in accordance with the relevant laws and regulations.
Program Profile
The Department of Geography was established to offer a high-quality program for students to follow and learn the latest technologies and at the same time to enable them to participate in applied and theoretical research. The undergraduate program has been prepared in accordance with the common education strategy and the understanding of gaining experience through practice. Thus, it will be possible to easily adapt new trends in technology. The program aims to provide practical skills in all areas of geography.
Geography undergraduate program (First Level in the Bologna Process Higher Education Qualifications Framework, Level 6 in TYYÇ) is an academically focused program that provides its graduates with qualifications for transition to professional practice areas, research areas, master's and doctoral programs that require advanced knowledge, skills and competence. . The education and training methods of geography science, which aims to understand, analyze and interpret the mechanisms of natural systems and establish their interaction with humans, are evaluated separately for each course within the scope of the master's program. Professional Profiles of Graduates with Examples
Every student who graduates from the program can work as a researcher, GIS expert and rapporteur in studies to be carried out within the scope of geography under the umbrella of relevant official institutions within many ministries, provided that they fulfill the conditions determined by the statute and law. Mineral Research and Exploration Institute, State Hydraulic Works, Agriculture and Rural Services, General Directorate of Forestry, Highways, Disaster Affairs, General Directorate of Meteorological Affairs, State Statistics Institute, State Planning Organization, etc. can work within official organizations such as and ministries such as the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization, the Ministry of Forestry and Water Affairs; They can work in regional planning studies and municipal planning activities. They can also pursue an academic career by enrolling in relevant master's and doctoral programs at universities in Turkey and abroad.
Qualification Criteria and Regulations
In order to gain proficiency in this field by graduating from the GEOGRAPHY Master's program,
1- General Academic Grade Point Average (CGPA) not less than 2.5/4.00,
2- Those who have successfully defended their thesis,
3- It is given to students who have passed all courses in the program (120 ECTS) with at least a CB or S grade.

Exams
How successful students are in achieving the predicted learning outcomes of each course unit in the GEOGRAPHY Master's program curriculum is measured by mid-term activities and final exams at the end of each semester. Evaluation of in-term activities includes at least a number of midterm exams and one assignment as mandatory evaluation methods for all courses in master's programs determined by the regulation. Programs are encouraged to define more evaluation methods in in-term activities based on the need to measure the success of outcomes at the program and course level to meet educational goals and objectives. The nature and number of evaluation methods used for each course, along with their contribution to the final grade, are given under the heading "Assessment and Evaluation" in the course descriptions. These regulations are announced in advance, at the beginning of each semester, and course descriptions are published on the website. Midterm and final exams are held on the dates, places and times determined and announced by the university. Students' end-of-term grades are given by the instructors, based on the results of midterm exams, homework evaluations, quizzes, final exams and other evaluations, if any, taking into account the students' meeting the attendance requirements. The impact rates of the semester success grade and the final exam on the success grade are announced to the students by the instructor responsible for the course within the first two weeks of the semester. The contribution of the final exam is at least 40% and at most 60% for all courses in all undergraduate programs determined by the Regulation. Courses such as job placement that do not require a midterm, homework, quiz and/or final exam are determined by the administrations of the relevant departments, and specific evaluation and grading methods for these courses are announced through the channels described above. The evaluation of such activities is made in line with the principles determined by the Senate and is evaluated as Successful or Failed.
Evaluation
A student's success is evaluated by the instructor for each assessment (term studies and final) defined for each course. The assessment is based on 100 full points. A student who receives one of the AA, BA, BB, CB and S (Pass) grades from a course is deemed to have succeeded that course. Achievement status of students; Semester academic average and general academic average are determined by calculating over 4.00 and are announced at the end of each semester. Multiplying the credits of a course and the coefficient of the success grade received from that course gives the weighted score of that course. The semester academic average is calculated by dividing the total weighted scores of the courses in the course plan in that semester by the total credits of the courses. Annual courses are included in the spring semester academic average. The general academic average is calculated by dividing the total of weighted scores calculated based on the success grades the student received from all the courses he/she had to take during the education period, by the total credits of the courses taken (120 ECTS). Graduation Requirements
In order for a student to graduate from the Department of Geography master's program, he must meet the following conditions:
• Completing 120 ECTS credits with a passing grade (54 ECTS credits for 7 master's courses, 6 ECTS credits for the Seminar Course, 20 ECTS credits for 2 Special Field Courses and 40 ECTS credits for Thesis Studies carried out over 2 consecutive semesters)
• Prepare and successfully present your thesis
