Course Objective
Teaching the basic concepts of marine and inland waters pollution, evaluation and discussion of pollution types.
Brief Content of the Course
Physical and chemical properties of seawater and inland water; Composition of seawater and inland waters; General currents of oceans; Principal properties of Turkish seas (Mediterranean, Marmara and Black seas); Principal properties of some inland waters in Turkey; Introduction to marine and inland water pollution: major organic/inorganic pollutans; Marine environment as a waste receiving body, assimilative capacity; Wastewater discharge regulations in Turkey and European countries; The need for control of pollution; Definition of potentially harmful substances: inorganics, organics, radioactive matters, solid wastes; Marine and inland waters hydrodynamics: dilution, dispersion and mixing of pollutants in the marine and inland water environment; Transports of dissolve/particulate pollutants: atmospheric, riverine discharges, direct discharges, thermal pollution; Land-based and coastal/open water pollution; Nutrient pollution, eutrophication, hypoxia; Pollution monitoring/biomonitoring; Consequences of oil pollution; Oil spills and clean-up; Heavy metal pollution; Potential impairment of marine and inland water ecosystems and water uses; Sustainable case studies.
