Course Objective
This course is an introductory course to Second language acquisition, or SLA, and it aims at investigating language acquisition in general, recognizing and defining language acquisition theories and researching the contribution of several factors, including instruction, to the development of language.
Brief Content of the Course
First and second language acquisition theories (behaviorism, innativeness, information processing, connectionist view, interactional approach); first language and target language development stages and processes; case studies, comparative analysis of main and target language usage from corpus data; records of interaction in second language in the classroom and comparison of second language acquisition between children and adults via transcription, stages of development in mother language acquisition, stages of form-syntactic development in second language, second language acquisition processes, learner characteristics in second language acquisition and individual differences in final learning outcomes (for example, personality influence, language ability, intelligence, acquisition age, motivation and attitude, learning preferences and beliefs), differences in secondary and foreign language learning contexts (for example, natural and structured learning environments)
