Course Objective

The course is designed to provide students with a capability of multi-dimensional evaluation and analysis of the relations between Turkey and the EU. To be able to evaluate and understand current relations, it is necessary to know historical evolution of the relations. Therefore, providing a historical background and examining the legal basis of the official relations under the Ankara Association Agreement and the Customs Union constitute important parts of the course content. Helsinki Summit and Turkey’s candidacy status, the relations in the post-Helsinki era are among the several issues that will be explored in this course. The main purpose of the course is to analyze the interaction between the different aspects (political, economic and legal) of the relations in order to have a clear and analytical understanding and evaluation of Turkey-EU relations. The course also offers discussions about the current issues in Turkey-EU relations, immediate and comprehensively critical issues of Turkey’s accession negotiation process for further analytical thinking of the issue.
