Course Objective
To introduce the development and change of Turkish Music History from past to present and to convey the interactions of Turkish music culture with surrounding music cultures.
Brief Content of the Course
Historical roots of Turkish musical culture, pre-Islamic Turkish musical culture, Central Asian period, music in old nomadic cultures and interactions with surrounding musical cultures. Post-Islamic Turkish musical culture, transition of Turks to Anatolia, western Asia, music in the medieval Islamic world. Music theory, instruments, genres, main composers in the Ottomans. Ottoman period music manuscripts, interactions with various musical cultures and new musical formations, reflections of increasing relations with the West in music, the first western musical elements and institutions in Turkey. Music in the Republic period, multicultural music structure in Anatolia, new musical formations.
