Course Objective
The Ottoman Empire, which held dominion over significant territories and strategic locations across three major continents, reached a high level of military, political, economic, and cultural development during its period of rise. However, starting from the early 19th century, it rapidly entered a period of decline and disintegration. In other words, the Ottoman Empire — the greatest world power of the early modern era — experienced a swift decline in the modern age and faced collapse by the early 20th century. This course aims to explain the political, military, and economic conditions of the Ottoman Empire at the beginning of the modern age, to clarify the reasons that led to its decline, and to help students understand the efforts made by Ottoman statesmen to preserve the state, as well as the Empire’s relations with other world powers during its final period.
