Course Objective
This is an introductory course that aims to develop pre-service teachers' awareness and knowledge of English curriculum or instructional program used nationwide and to promote their understanding of basic issues related to English curriculum such as curriculum approaches, educational objectives, learning domains and outcomes, teaching approaches and methods and assessment.
Brief Content of the Course
This course aims to discuss the key concepts, principles, and nature of the curriculum development process. The nature of syllabus design will be explored, and the differences between curriculum development and syllabus design will be discussed. The new directions in the design of syllabus and curriculum will be covered and the impact of communicative approach on curriculum development, instruction, and the language teaching materials will be focused on. Students will be informed about the features of needs analysis and how to adopt it. Additionally, the class will explore the aims and outcomes in a curriculum, the procedure of course planning, and various approaches to curriculum evaluation. various curriculum samples of ELT basic education programs. Finally, students will have enough knowledge about the historical development of English curricula in Türkiye and examine the English language curricula for Grades 2-8 and Grades 9-12.
